Tutorials : Single Crochet

  1. When working the first row of single crochet stitches into a foundation of single chain stitches (aka Base Stitches), place first stitch into 2nd chain from hook. (The skipped chain serves as your turning chain.)

  2. The method shown in this video is to place the first row of stitches ONLY into the top loop of the foundation chains. For all patterns on Art of Crochet, this is the default method of working into a chain-stitch foundation. It creates the most flexible edge, that has just enough decoration that it can be left without a border.

  3. Insert hook into top loop of second chain from hook, yarn over and draw loop through chain.

  4. Yarn over and pull through both loops on hook. First Single Crochet stitch made.

  5. Insert hook into top loop of next chain, yarn over and draw loop through chain.

  6. Yarn over and pull through both loops on hook. Second Single Crochet stitch made.

  7. Repeat steps 5 & 6 until 1 chain remains.

  8. For the last foundation chain, insert hook in both the top loop and the back loop, and work stitch as before.

  9. If your chain twists, try giving it a small tug or try straightening your turning chain. If that doesn't work, try going up a hook size ONLY for your foundation chain (and switch back for the single crochet stitches).

  10. Chain one. This chain is called your Turning Chain and brings the hook up to the level of a single crochet stitch. (If you skip the turning chain, the first stitch in the row will get squished downward.)

  11. Insert hook under both top loops of the first stitch in row and work a single crochet as before.

  12. Continue to end of row. Voilà! 2 rows of Single Crochet stitches made.
